COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- Collier County Sheriff's deputies say a homeless man broke into a Naples home on River Beach Drive while an 11-year-old boy was inside, gave the child a hug, grabbed a beer and lit up a cigarette.
The child's father told deputies he called the house on his way home to speak to his son. Newbry answered the phone and said, "This is Earl. I own the house, and I am going to hug your kid."
The father rushed home.
The boy told deputies he was sitting at home when Newbry came in from the back slider, said he owned the house, hugged the child, then went to the kitchen to grab a beer. The boy said he was so scared, he ran to a neighbor for help.
When deputies asked Newbry what happened, his story matched up with the boy's, and he insisted he was the owner of the house. He said the boy looked scared, so he gave him a hug.
The child was not hurt.
Deputies arrested Newbry for burglary and petit theft.
