NORTH PORT, Fla.- Officers with the North Port Police Department arrested a man on burglary charges Sunday at 3:00 a.m., after he allegedly broke into a home and chased the homeowners.

Police responded to the 8400 block of Tropicaire Boulevard, where the victims said they were startled by the breaking of their sliding glass door.

The suspect, later identified as Bobby Shears, confronted the homeowners. When they escaped to a bedroom, Shears tried to kick in the door; however, they were able to flee the residence and find refuge with a neighbor.

Officers arrived and set up a perimeter around the residence. They entered with a K-9 to find Shears sitting on a chair, refusing to comply with officers’ verbal commands to show his hands. He had a large knife in his possession. The K-9 was commanded to bite Shears in attempt to disarm him.

Officers were able to place handcuffs on Shears and place him under arrest. He was transported to North Port SMH to receive treatment for his wounds.
