FORT MYERS, Fla.- A deadly accident on McGregor Boulevard happened months ago, but the man who was behind the wheel is just now behind bars. Monday night, police arrested Paul Pombier of Fort Myers, after he was released from the hospital. 25-year-old, Tiffany Thomas died when the car hit a tree. WINK News talked to the owner of the home where the accident happened.

"We were just woken up by a really loud boom and I saw the car wrapped around the second tree. The first tree had been knocked about 100 feet into the driveway here and my mailbox was in the neighbors yard," said Derrick Isaac.

Isaac recalls the early morning hours of January 28th; the deadly accident happened right in front of his house.

"We ran out and saw what looked like a man slumped over the steering wheel, bleeding from the head," Isaac explained.

Police say the man behind the wheel was 50-year-old Paul Pombier. He lost control of his car and slammed head on into a tree. His passenger, Tiffany Thomas didn't survive the crash.

"It was shocking, you could kind of tell immediately what was going on; firefighters checked on her and it appeared that they weren't getting any kind of response."

The night of the accident, Pombier was taken to the hospital in critical condition. WINK received video from the Lee County Sheriffs Office showing Pombier being booked into jail Monday night, still unable to walk.

"It was real frightening, it was a little surreal; I had heard of accidents on this corner before so that immediately registered," said Isaac.

Investigators say Pombier had a blood alcohol level of three times the legal limit and he was speeding. He faces a list of charges including dui, dui manslaughter and vehicular homicide.
