IMMOKALEE, Fla.- Collier County deputies arrested 25-year-old Marcelino Mateo on assault and battery charges Sunday after he allegedly threatened partygoers with a machete.
Witnesses say Mateo was taking pictures of a woman and her children at a community pool, located on the 600 block of 9th St. in Immokalee. When she asked him to stop, the victim told deputies Mateo forcibly threw her into the pool, went to his residence, retrieved a machete and swung it at her. The victim said she was able to block the machete with a piece of metal frame, which deputies later located. Mateo then allegedly turned his attention to another victim, chasing him with the machete, before running home to hide the weapon.
According to deputies, Mateo had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol when they confronted him. Mateo had a laceration over his eye, which he claimed was from the victim hitting him when the altercation began, but witnesses say that never happened. Instead, they say he tripped and fell when returning him with the machete.
Mateo was charged with aggravated assault without intent to kill and with battery.
