FORT MYERS, Fla.- Fort Myers Police have made an arrest in the death of a baby this week at the Horizons Apartments. Authorities arrested 31-year-old Derrick Johnson at 4:30 a.m. on charges of aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter.
Police say Johnson beat 2-year-old Brianna Addison to death while the child's mother was at work. Johnson is the mother's live-in boyfriend, according to FMPD.
"The child has numerous contusions to the sternum and facial region. Everything consistent with grabbing hold of a child and shaking a child and beating a child. Anybody who commits child abuse on a child is a monster," said Sgt. O'Reilly of the Fort Myers Police Department.
Johnson has a lengthy record of drug and weapons arrests.
Officials with the Department of Children and Families said, "It's a terrible situation to learn a child suffered in this way. We have an ongoing child welfare investigation and are working closely with law enforcement. The other children are in DCF's care. We have had prior history with this family.
DCF visited the family's home twice before the toddler's death, but they say neither of the visits involved Johnson.
