PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office arrested a Jacksonville man Wednesday as he was returned from Duval County on a warrant to face a charge of Sexual Assault on a Child that occurred in Port Charlotte last Sep. 4 on an 11-year old runaway girl. A CCSO Warrant Squad detective arrested 54-year-old Christopher James Roberts, of 2721 Lowell Avenue.

On Dec. 18, 2012, CCSO detectives arrested his son, 37-year-old Christopher Maurice Roberts, for having sex twice with the same 11-year-old girl. She was staying in a Fort Myers youth shelter and granted a weekend home visit. When she got home, she ran away; she was located and returned to the shelter. The girl told a counselor about the sex by two men in an unknown Port Charlotte home; the counselor notified CCSO. She said after she ran away she was approached by a man in acustom painted purple 4-door car who asked if she needed a ride. She told him she was walking to a gas station to buy a soda so he offered her a ride and she accepted. During the ride she said he began discussing different sexually related topics including sexual intercourse and oral sex.

The girl said the man drove her to an unknown home in Port Charlotte and they went into a bedroom. He asked her to perform oral sex on him and she did. He then took her into the living room where his father (Christopher James Roberts) was; the father asked her to perform oral sex on him too. The son took her back into bedroom and they had sexual intercourse. The girl gave detailed descriptions of the two men. She also said she did not offer any resistance as she was in fear for her life if she had resisted.

A BOLO was issued about the two unknown suspects and the purple car. On Sep. 24, a North Port Police check revealed a traffic stop was made on a custom painted purple 2006 Dodge Charger. The driver was Christopher Maurice Roberts and the passenger was his father, Christopher James Roberts. Their photos were put in a photo lineup and the girl positively identified both men.

On Dec. 18, a CCSO detective was traveling south on U.S. 41 approaching the Punta Gorda bridge and saw the purple car going northbound; he couldn’t turn around so he contacted other units in the area to look for the car. Moments later a deputy stopped the purple car at 3013 Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte; the driver was Christopher Maurice Roberts. The detective questioned him about the sexual battery case; he declined to comment and wanted to speak to his attorney. He was transported to the Charlotte County Jail and charged with two felony counts of Capital Sexual Battery; he remains in jail onno bond. This is his fourth booking; he was arrested on drug charges a year ago, and on April 30 in an undercover prostitution operation for Deriving Support from Prostitution at a Jones Loop Road area motel. At the time of that arrest, Roberts was living on Cape Horn Boulevard in Burnt Store Lakes.

The father, Christopher James Roberts, was charged with Sexual Battery on a Child. He also remains in jail on no bond.
