PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- A Charlotte County Sheriff's Street Crimes Unit deputy made a traffic stop for a seat belt violation Wednesday that led to arrests of four Cape Coral residents and seizure of 958 grams of marijuana and $1,359 in cash. Authorities arrested 50-year-old Gustavo Modesto Figueredo and his wife 40-year-old Yoenny Cruz, both of 1044 NE 16th Place. Eduardo Fernandez-Alfonso, 51, of 1823 SW Santa Barbara Avenue, and 34-year-old Alexey Fernandez, of 235 NE 16th Place, were also arrested.

The SCU deputy observed Fernandez, thedriver, not wearing his seatbelt.Another SCU deputy in the area also observed the same violation. A traffic stop was made on the Tuckers Grade I-75 northbound rampat Exit-158 at 10:07a.m.As the deputy approached Fernandez he was spraying his clothing with a bottle of cologne. The front seat passenger, Figueredo, was spraying the inside the white 1999 Toyotawith a bottle of cologne. Cruz was in the back seat with three bottles of perfume and next to her was Fernandez-Alfonso. Deputies asked if there were any weapons, drugs or contraband inside the vehicle; Fernandez said no and gave permission to search the car.

Other deputies arrived and began the search and smelled fresh marijuana coming from inside the car. A check of the trunk under the carpet where the spare tire was kept, found the four clear plastic bags of marijuana. Fernandez advised the other three did not speak English so a CCSO Spanish speaking deputy was brought to the scene; all refused to talk and were taken to the Charlotte County Jail. The car was towed to the CCSO impound yard. All four were charged with Possession of Marijuana with intent to Distribute, Possession of Marijuana Over 20 Grams, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Bond was set on all four at $6,000 each. The investigation continues.
