PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's detectives solved burglaries to three unlocked vehicles, one vehicle window smashed out, and theft of items from a carport early last Saturday morning in Port Charlotte. Ronald Wayne Flanary, 18, of 740 Floral Lane, was arrested.
CCSO received a call at 4:29 a.m. from a resident on the 22100 block of Felton Avenue who said he heard his car alarm going off in his unlocked vehicle. The ashtray and a yellow and black box cutter plus loose change were stolen. Minutes later, a CCSO K9 unit located Flanary near Felton Avenue and Starlite Lane who was rummaging through a pile of items on the sidewalk. Flanary was holding a black and yellow box cutter in his hand and gave it to the deputy. He also had a backpack that contained numerous other items. The victim arrived and identified the box cutter and ash tray.
On the ground was a large pill bottle with the name of a homeowner in the 2300 block of Starlite Lane. Deputies contacted the man and found many of the stolen items were from the owner’s carport. The owner identified his items that were in Flanary’s possession. Deputies found a registration to a Ford Ranger pickup and located it in the 2400 block of Starlite Lane. They found the pickup with a smashed window; the owner was not home. Another unlocked vehicle in the 2400 block of Starlite Lane was discovered and a GPS was stolen. Also in the same block, an unlocked car was entered but nothing appeared missing.
Deputies and detectives took Flanary in for questioning. He said he did not burglarize any vehicles and said the items found were his. When asked about the vehicle registration in his possession he said he never saw it before. Flanary said he smoked synthetic marijuana and drank a large quantity of alcohol earlier and didn’t remember much. He then said the items were given to him by his friend; a check with the friend said he did not give Flanary any items.
Flanary was searched and found 10 Hydromorpone pills in his wallet; he said he never saw them before. He was arrested and transported to the Charlotte County Jail. He was charged with Armed Burglary, Burglary to a Dwelling, Burglary to an Unoccupied Vehicle, Possession of Hydromorphone, and three counts of petit theft. Flanary remains in jail on $48,000.
