PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's detectives arrested the man who is accused of robbing the Murdock SunTrust Bank last Thursday. Detectives are will also be charging him with Armed Robbery of the Asian Cai Lay Market on Oct. 18. Robin Patrick Conte, 39, of 2125 Tea Street, is being held on a warrant for robbery of the bank.
MCU detectives developed Conte as the prime suspect after interviewing witnesses and viewing the bank and area business surveillance videos. Conte entered SunTrust sporting a goatee, wearing a hat backwards, sunglasses, a jacket, pants and a red tee shirt. He demanded cash and then fled with an undetermined amount of money. A witness saw the robber leave the bank and get on a very small electric scooter. The scooter was recovered nearby along with the robber’s jacket that he discarded.
The MCU detective’s investigation and intelligence obtained learned that Conte fled and was in the Tampa area. Further information obtained by members of the CCSO Warrant Squad, who are also members of the U.S. Marshal Task Force, learned Conte was at Tampa General Hospital for a previous prison medical condition. Contact was made with the U.S. Marshal Task Force in Tampa; they responded and located Conte in the hospital. He was taken into custody and remains under guard pending his release and return to Charlotte County.
CCSO detectives went to Tampa Sunday and interviewed Conte. MCU detectives said Conte is being held on the bank robbery warrant with no bond. He will also be arrested for Armed Robbery of the Asian Cai Lay Market when he is returned to the Charlotte County Jail.
