LEHIGH ACRES, Fla.- Lee County Sheriff's deputies arrested 18-year-old Marcus Burger Wednesday for allegedly bringing a loaded gun to East Lee County High School.
An anonymous student alerted deputies, who then searched Burger's book bag. A semi-automatic handgun was found inside, containing nine bullets in the magazine and one in the chamber.
A textbook located inside the bag belonged to a student at Oak Hammock Middle School, but the papers inside had Burger's name on them. Burger told authorities the bag did not belong to him and that he had found it, unaware that there was a gun inside. Burger said he carried it around with him and even put some of his school paper in the front pocket, but detectives didn't believe his story.
Later, school surveillance showed Burger arriving on campus with the bag in his possession.
A records check of the firearm revealed it had not been reported stolen.
Burger was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds and was transported to the Lee County Jail without further incident.
