PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man on 15 felony charges stemming from a July 18 theft of jewelry from a Punta Gorda home and selling the items to two gold buyers. Justin Andrew Derose, 27, of 9082 Acorn Boulevard, turned himself in at the Charlotte County Jail Monday at 10:00 a.m.
The victim called CCSO to report jewelry and gold coins valued at $1,165 were stolen from her home in the 2100 block of Mark Avenue, Punta Gorda. She advised Derose was her daughter’s boyfriend and he had stayed in the home for about three weeks before she discovered the items missing. A Punta Gorda Police detective advised he was also working on a case involving Derose on several pawned transactions.
Deputies went to Gulf Coast Metals on Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte and located documents showing Derose had sold a tennis bracelet and a gold bracelet on June 30. He also sold other items there on July 3. A detective went to Gold Pros on Tamiami Trail at Town Center Mall and located several other stolen jewelry items and obtained Derose’s photo identification and documents. Photographs were obtained of the stolen items and the victim positively identified them as hers.
At the jail Monday, Derose said the money he got from the sale of the items was used to buy drugs. Derose was charged with Grand Theft, 12 counts of Dealing in Stolen Property, and two counts of False Ownership to a Pawnbroker. Derose remains in the Charlotte County Jail on no bond.
