ENGLEWOOD EAST, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's detectives arrested two of four men involved in an Englewood East kidnapping earlier this month. Christopher Lee Carroll, 40, of 7363 Mullen Lane, and Kelly Ryan Bodell, 22, a Venice resident, were arrested.
Detectives said on July 2, Mark Robert Plutt, 31, of 261-B Rotonda Boulevard, was at Carroll’s home where he had been staying a few nights. At 11:30 a.m., Bodell entered the home; put a gun in his face, then hit him several times in the face and head with his bare hands. Bodell said Plutt needed to give him $200 he owed him from a previous robbery that occurred several weeks prior to this incident over prescription medications.
While the confrontation was going on, two other subjects arrived. Plutt wanted to leave but was told he was not going anywhere until Bodell got his money. Bodell said if he didn’t get the money it would not be good for Plutt and he was going to have broken legs. Plutt believed Bodell who is a martial arts fighter. After five hours, Plutt became fearful he was not going to get away and asked to use the phone to call his grandparents to send him money via a Money Gram sent to the Englewood Wal-Mart. Plutt faked the call and his captors believed him. All but Carroll drove to Wal-Mart; Plutt went to Guest Services while Bodell watched at the entrance. Plutt stalled until he saw a female approach Bodell which distracted him; Plutt saw his chance and ran out of the area toward the tire center with the three men chasing after him. As they entered the bay area, an employee walked in and Plutt yelled for help. Bodell and the other two men ran out an exit, got into the same SUV, and drove off.
During the investigation and talking further to Plutt, detective arrested him for Burglary, Grand Theft, and False Ownership of a Pawned Item in connection with a June 13 home burglary in the 12800 block of Xavier Avenue in Englewood East. Plutt then gave more details of the kidnapping and positively identified the other two men.
Carroll and Bodell are both charged with Kidnapping and False Imprisonment; Bodell was additionally charged with Battery and Violation of Probation. This is Carroll’s 14th booking and the second for Bodell. They remain in the Charlotte County Jail on no bond. Plutt also remains in jail on the home burglary charges. The investigation remains ongoing and a search for the other two accomplices continues.
