LEHIGH ACRES, Fla.- Lee County Sheriff's deputies arrested a 28-year-old Alva man Wednesday night, for allegedly breaking into a vehicle and attempting to steal it.
David Driscoll is facing burglary and attempted grand theft charges after the owner of the vehicle allegedly caught him in the act.
The victim told deputies he thought he heard gunshots outside his home on the 4500 block of 26th St. SW and went to investigate. In doing so, he found Driscoll in the driver's seat of his car. The victim asked the suspect what he was doing in the vehicle. Though he had not met Driscoll before, the suspect replied, "I know you" and even said his name was David.
The victim could see that the center console had been gone through and Driscoll had a set of keys that had been in the vehicle in his hand. Fortunately, the keys were the victim's wife's work keys and did not include the car's ignition key.
After failing to start the car, Driscoll fled on foot.
While investigating, LCSO received a separate call about a suspicious person on the 4500 block of 22nd St. SW. The complainant said a man was hiding behind his car. Officers arrived and found Driscoll in the fetal position in the front passenger seat of the vehicle.
He was positively identified by the victim and subsequently arrested.
