ENGLEWOOD, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's detectives arrested two boys involved in stealing a kayak, items from another boat, and attempting to steal a motorboat in the Englewood area Wednesday. A 12-year-old Englewood East and a 13-year-old from Grove City were arrested for the crime.
The detectives learned that the 12-year-old met the other yound suspect at Ainger Creek Marina, located at 2002 Placida Road. They entered a large boat and stole a cast net and a pair of binoculars. They then walked nearby to 1026 Lee Street and stole a $1,200 orange kayak; they paddled it to 2061 South Pine Street where the 12-year-old attempted to start the motor on a $5,000 motorboat, but was confronted by the owner. The boy fled by jumping into and swimming across a canal, only to be taken into custody by a deputy.
Deputies located the 13-year-old suspect at his home and brought him in for questioning. The two boys were arrested and transported to the Charlotte County Jail. Both were charged with Burglary (boat), and Grand Theft (kayak) and Petit Theft. The 12-year-old was additionally charged with Vehicle Grand Theft.
The two boys were released to their parents for further juvenile court action.
