COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. John Mercurio, 26, was arrested on Tuesday night on charges of trafficking heroin and battery on an officer.
Mercurio was pulled over while driving on Pine Ridge Road after failing to stop at a stop sign. When officers conducted the routine checks, it was revealed that Mercurio was driving on a suspended license.
Officers attempted to place the suspect under arrest, at which point Mercurio took off running towards the woods, according to police reports. When the officer caught up to the suspect, Mercurio turned and took a fighting stance and struck the officer in the chest with his fist.
Mercurio continued running after a brief physical altercation with the officer, who continued to chase the suspect on foot.
According to police reports, the suspect was allegedly seen reaching into his pockets and discarding items that he had on him. A search of the area was later conducted and officials located 81 small bags of heroin and other drug paraphernalia.
After catching Mercurio, the officer placed the suspect under arrest. He is now facing charges of trafficking heroin, battery on an officer, resisting with violence, possession of paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license.
