LEE COUNTY, Fla.- William Lopez-Torres is the latest suspect to be arrested in the Lee County School District check cashing scheme. The 23-year-old was arrested on May 24 and faces charges of theft and passing a counterfeit check. He and several others allegedly cashed counterfeit Lee County School District payroll checks at a local Walmart stores.
At least nine others have been arrested for the same crime since the investigation began in April. It was revealed at that time, that several subjects uttered counterfeit checks at various businesses in Lee County using the school district's payroll bank account number.
After obtaining certified copies of the counterfeit checks, it was determined that the checks were similar to the School District's authentic checks, although the names on the counterfeit checks were not names of Lee County School District employees.
As in the previous arrests, the suspects were identified through video surveillance and used their real identities on the counterfeit checks.
