PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's detectives Thursday arrested a senior trustee of American Legion Post 103, located at 2101 Taylor Road, for Grand Theft and Scheme to Defraud.
Richard Blaisdell Purington, 65, of 23250 Harper Avenue in Port Charlotte, was arrested for the crime.
On March 29, the Post Finance Officer contacted CCSO about monies missing that Purington was responsible for from an “Ad-Tb” game, a form of instant BINGO. Purington was the only person who ran the games, handled all records, and the only person with keys to the machines.
Post Board members hired a local accounting firm to do an audit of the Ad-Tab books and the audit report said $7,968 was missing and unaccounted for from Sep. 20, 2011 to Jan. 15, 2012. The game boxes would have generated $7,992 for the Post and then used to fund charity and fund raising events.
Following a lengthy investigation by ECU detectives, probable cause was developed to arrest Purington and transport him to the Charlotte County Jail. He posted a $5,000 bond and was released.
