COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- A 23-year-old San Antonio, Florida man is accused of stealing a motorcycle and crashing it on I-75.
Asley Acosta was charged with Grand Theft.
The victim told Collier County deputies that he awoke at 4:22 on Sunday morning to the sound of his dog barking and his motorcycle engine starting. He told deputies that the suspect must have broken the steering wheel lock. The victim ran outside, but didn't get a good look at the suspect. He told deputies he believed the suspect was heading south on Tamiami Trail.
With a very specific description of the bike, deputies found a matching bike, within 25 minutes, traveling south on I-75. The motorcyclist would not pull over or yield the deputy's instructions. The deputy called out a pursuit.
Just before 5:00 a.m., another deputy located the vehicle on the I-75 entrance ramp and Golden Gate Parkway, in pieces. The driver was located 25 feet away from the motorcycle, in the ditch, without any shoes on. His shoes were later located and one shoelace was intertwined in the motorcycle's ignition.
The suspect gave deputies his name and told them his wallet was in his front pocket before he stopped speaking legibly. He was transported to Naples Community Hospital.
The victim responded to the scene and identified the bike as his own.
