PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office reports two more Sarasota women have been arrested Friday that were involved in the April 19 Macy’s clothing theft at Town Center Mall and subsequent car crash while fleeing. The driver of the car, Nina Monic Brown, 27, was arrested. She is charged with Grand Theft, Fleeing to Elude at High Speed, Resisting Officers, and Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Personal Injury. She is now at the Charlotte County Jail.
Macy’s security observed three women steal 46 clothing items (valued at $1,124), put them in Brown’s car and take off from the mall in Port Charlotte. A deputy spotted the car and followed. The car took off at a high rate of speed but the deputy broke off pursuit for safety reasons. Moments later the car crashed into the rear of a flatbed truck on northbound U.S. 41 heading toward North Port.
Brown and passenger Eboni Joyneice Hatcher, 19, both fled but were quickly arrested. Passenger Linda Ann Watkins, 40, was the most seriously injured, being pinned in the wreckage.
Hatcher was released from a Port Charlotte hospital the next day and arrested on charges of Grand Theft and Resisting a Merchant; she posted bond April 28.
Brown was transported to a Sarasota hospital with severe facial injuries.
Watkins was taken to a Tampa hospital; she turned herself in today at the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office on Grand Theft charges.
Brown is being held on $55,000 bond at the Charlotte County Jail; Watkins will be transferred from the SCSO jail to Charlotte County to face charges here.
