LEHIGH ACRES, FL- A Lehigh Acres woman is facing charges of theft and passing a counterfeit check after allegedly cashing a counterfeit Lee County School District payroll check at a local Walmart.
Tina Groff, 27, was arrested on Tuesday morning and remains in custody at Lee County Jail.
Detectives began an investigation after receiving a criminal complaint from Lee County School District in regards to several counterfeit checks that were being cashed at multiple locations in Lee County, according to a sheriff's office report.
The School District was notified by their banking institution that several subjects uttered counterfeit checks at various businesses in Lee County using the school district's payroll bank account number.
After obtaining certified copies of the counterfeit checks, it was determined that the checks were similar to the School District's authentic checks, although the names on the counterfeit checks were not names of Lee County School District employees.
The suspects were identified through video surveillance due to the fact that they used their real identities on the counterfeit checks.
Groff was identified as one of the suspects, and was apprehended after cashing a counterfeit check for $1,884.32, according to police reports.
