NAPLES, Fla.- A 52-year-old Naples woman is accused of beating her boyfriend of 18 years with a sledge hammer on Monday night.
Angela Rhodes was arrested for the crime and charged with Aggravated Battery.
When deputies arrived at Bayshore Dr. and Karen Dr., they found the victim lying in the road with blood coming from his eyes, nose and mouth.
The suspect was screaming and had to be restrained by deputies, eventually telling them that her son had attacked the victim and fled the scene.
When asked who had hurt him, the victim said "Angie."
EMS took custody of the victim and transported him to Lee Memorial Hospital.
Deputies observed a white Buick still running with it's headlights on in the driveway of 2918 Karen Dr. A bloody sledge hammer was found on the floorboard inside the vehicle.
The couple had lived at the residence on Karen Dr. for 18 years, but the victim had recently broken up with Rhodes. The Collier County Sheriff's Office had responded to the home twice before this incident.
Rhodes' son had witnessed the event and told officers that the couple had started fighting, so he left. When he returned, the victim was just as the deputies had found him.
Once at the station, Rhodes gave deputies a different account of what had happened. She stated that while she was at the victim's home, her son had grabbed her purse, which had cash and prescriptions in it. She yelled for the victim, who came to her aide, and began fighting with a fourth person. Rhodes told officers the fourth person fled the scene after the fight.
Due to the inconsistencies in her story, Rhodes was charged with the crime.
