LEHIGH ACRES, Fla.- An arrest has been made in the Easter morning murder on Broadway Avenue in Fort Myers. Jamaal Dixon, 29, of 4815 30th St. SW in Lehigh Acres, was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force at approximately 9:00 p.m. on April 16.
The victim is identified as 50-year-old Richard Reese.
The investigation by the Lee County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit reveals Dixon was at the residence during the early morning hours on April 8. According to a witness also in the residence at the time, Dixon demanded Reese give him drugs for free. When Reese refused, Dixon pulled a firearm from his waistband and again demanded Reese give him the money and drugs he had in his pockets. Dixon kept the firearm pointed at Reese while robbing him.
In an act of self defense, Reese grabbed the barrel of the gun. Dixon then shot Reese, causing him to fall unconsciously to the ground. Dixon rummaged through Reese's pockets looking for drugs and money before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
Dixon is charged with First Degree Felony Murder and Robbery with a Firearm.
