CAPE CORAL, Fla.- Jorge Gutierrez of Cape Coral was found guilty on Monday, receiving five years of probation and restitution for uttering $22,000 in bad checks.
Gutierrez received the sentencing after being arrested four days prior to Christmas in 2011.
Gutierrez carried out this crime several days before Christmas in 2010. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office Economic Crimes Unit caught up to Gutierrez one year after his spending spree, and arrested him.
A three month investigation revealed Gutierrez would deposit worthless checks in his business account at a North Fort Myers bank under the name AJ Maintenance Solutions LLC.
Several days before Christmas in 2010, Gutierrez began depositing the worthless checks. Once the checks were credited to his account, Gutierrez went on a shopping spree and made several large purchases that included electronics, toys and household items. Bank employees became suspicious when the suspect's bank account started showing a negative balance of more than $20,000. The bank notified the Lee County Sheriff's Office, which launched an investigation.
