FORT MYERS, Fla. - If for some reason you cannot leave town before a storm, shelters will be open and available.

Space is limited in public shelters and depending on the storm's track and predicted surge, not all shelters will be open. So have a plan and stay tuned to WINK News for updates on shelter openings.

Also know that shelters are not hotels. You will need your own sleeping materials, personal hygiene products, extra clothes, medications and baby supplies. If you have kids, make sure to bring something to keep them entertained.

For people with special medical needs, you need to register now to go to a special needs shelter and you must reapply every year.

When making storm plans, you also need to include your pet! If you plan to evacuate before a storm, make sure to take your pet. Plan routes that include pet-friendly hotels.

If for some reason you can't leave town, there are designated pet shelters in Charlotte and Lee counties. You will need to pre-register in Collier County.
