CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. - Where you live is important when it comes to evacuating before storms. Our communities are divided up into zones which will be used when evacuations are issued.

In Lee and Charlotte County you will find colored tags attached to signs throughout the community. The color of the tags correspond to the evacuation zone you are in with red being "Zone A," the zone most likely to be evacuated first should a storm threaten our coast.

There are more than 9,000 colored collars around Charlotte County. Two years ago, Lee County started doing the same and now more than 200 colored squares with letters can be seen on evacuation routes and shelter signs throughout the community.

You won't see these colored tags in Collier, though because Collier does not issue evacuation orders by zone. That's because the county's zones are divided by major roadways and emergency managers will use geographic locations and major thoroughfares to issue evacuation orders.
