HURRICANE CENTRAL - When it comes to getting complete insurance coverage for your home, you need to do it now.
You cannot get immediate coverage when a tropical storm or hurricane reaches a certain distance from Florida. Insurance companies call this as being "in the box." This applies to new applications or requests for an increase in coverage. Also note that the type of building materials used in the construction of your home can affect the cost to insure it.
Homeowners policies don't include flood insurance. Most homes in Southwest Florida qualify for flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program. For more information, you can call them at 1-888-FLOOD-29 or your local insurance agent. Flood coverage involves a 30-day waiting period before the policy becomes effective unless it's purchased the same time you buy your home.
