FORT MYERS, Fla.-- When Southwest Florida is in the forecast cone of a storm, evacuation orders may be issued and shelters may start to open. In that event, it's important to know where you should go.
Evacuation signs are posted throughout our viewing area and maps can be found online. Just look for your county's emergency management link under our "storm link" section.
If you choose not to get out of the way of a storm, you'll need to take shelter. Public shelters will open up as a place of last resort. You'll be asked to check in when you arrive and to check out when you leave. And because shelters are not hotels, you'll have to bring your own supplies. Items you should bring include:
Water and special food items
Lawn chair or bedding of some sort
Entertainment-- especially for the kids
Change of clothes
For people with special medical needs you'll have to register for the special needs shelter before a storm. You can register with your county's emergency management center.
