As the Olympic runners hang up their race shoes, some snails in France hit the pavement in the race for their lives!

The world's fastest snails descended on the small French village of Lagardere for the latest event global sporting calendar. Spectators said the village was lively as it played host to the unusual sporting event.

This is the 30th year Lagardere has hosted the event and the 49th time there has been a World Snail Racing Championship.
