VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Benedict is calling for diplomacy and dialogue to replace arms and fighting in Libya.

Celebrating Mass in St. Peter's Square, Benedict contrasted war and hunger with the joy of Easter Sunday.

He prayed for people in the Middle East, "so that the light of peace and of human dignity may overcome the darkness of division, hate and violence." He also prayed for a society where "every political choice is inspired by respect for the human person."

Tens of thousands of people attended the open-air, Easter Sunday Mass.
