LEE COUNTY, Fla.-- The Lee County Chapter of the Red Cross is asking for donations to support relief efforts following the deadly earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
The organization says cash donations are best at this time.
Donations of canned goods and clothing can not be distributed immediately.
To donate, you can text "RedCross" to 90999. An $10 donation will show up on your next cell phone bill.
In the days since the quake and subsequent tsunami, the Red Cross texting campaign has already raised more than $1 million.
You can also donate by visiting www.redcross.org.
If you can't donate cash, Colin Downey with the Lee County Chapter of the American Red Cross says the next best thing you can do is learn from the tragedy. He says you should make sure to be prepared for any natural disasters here at home. For Southwest Florida, that means stocking up on your hurricane supply kit and having an evacuation plan in place in the event of an emergency.
