FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla - Jan Royland says without a doubt his 14 year old son has no business operation a personal watercraft. Royland and his family are on vacation from Norway and spent part of Wednesday out on the water.

Watercraft rentals at Holiday Water Sports in Fort Myers Beach have skyrocketed in recent weeks with a number of guests well under the age of 18. The business, however, only rents out personal watercraft to people 16 years old and up. The rule could soon become state law.

Legislators in Tallahassee are debating a bill that would raise the minimum age if those operating a personal watercraft to 16.

The age now is 14.

Many water sport rental companies on the already have similar requirements, but say the change in age will keep people safe out on the water.
