RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Family, friends and celebrities have paid last respects today to Elizabeth Edwards.
The 61-year-old Edwards was praised in eulogies as a strong woman who had to deal with a number of tragedies, including the death of her son and betrayal of her husband, John Edwards.
Sen. John Kerry and North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue were among hundreds who went to her funeral at a United Methodist church in Raleigh.
Edwards died of cancer. She is to be buried in a private ceremony later today alongside her 16-year-old son Wade, who died in a car crash.
Speakers at the funeral recalled Edwards as a woman filled with energy, intellect and humor.
John Edwards, her estranged husband, did not speak. The couple had four children together, including 12-year-old Emma Claire and 10-year-old Jack.
