TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) - Forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center say Tropical Storm Richard has strengthened into a hurricane.
The storm lashed Honduras' Caribbean coast with heavy rain and wind and became a hurricane on Sunday as it roared toward Belize and southeastern Mexico.
A hurricane warning was in effect for the coast of Belize and the western part of the Honduras coast.
Authorities warned of deadly floods and mudslides in Honduras and declared states of maximum alert in four coastal provinces.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says Richard is a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph.
