COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - Collier County Sheriff's Office investigators have arrested an East Naples man in connection with a homicide that was discovered early Wednesday.
Santos Anibal Martinez Lopez, 30, 3033 Coco Ave., is charged with second-degree murder. Deputies say he killed Kenneth Christ, 66, 2792 Arbutus St, East Naples.
Reports say a CCSO deputy conducted a traffic stop on a green Chevy S-10 pickup being driven by Martinez Lopez on the 4000 block of Bayshore Drive at around 1:30 a.m. and became suspicious when he saw what appeared to be blood on Martinez Lopez's clothing and in the truck. The deputy determined during the traffic stop that Christ was the owner of the vehicle.
Concerned for Christ's safety, another deputy went to Christ's home to conduct a welfare check. When he arrived he discovered that the front door was open. As he looked inside he saw a body lying on the couch surrounded with what appeared to be blood. He immediately called for back-up and EMS and entered to check on the victim's wellbeing. The body was later determined to be Christ's. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Martinez Lopez was also cited at the scene of the traffic stop for not having a valid driver's license.
During questioning, Martinez Lopez acknowledged being in the country illegally. He was carrying a Honduras identification card. Deputies with CCSO's Criminal Alien Task Force are investigating his immigration status.
