IMMOKALEE, Fla. - Attacked because he's Mexican. That's what one Immokalee man is claiming happened while he was trying to buy beer.
The customer tells Collier County deputies the clerk at the Sunoco on W. Main Street beat him after he tried to purchase beer with a $50 bill.
He claims Renu Zaman shouted "you Mexicans have too much money." That's when reports state Zaman grabbed a long wooden stick from behind the counter and hit the customer on the face. Zaman was arrested and charged with battery with a deadly weapon.
Renu Amin, the owner of the store and Zaman's brother, tells WINK News deputies got it all wrong. He claims the customer were drunk and trying to steal beer. Amin says his brother was using the stick in self defense after the customer threw a beer at his face.
Some witnesses living nearby side with the clerk's story. However, reports say surveillance footage supports the victim's story. WINK News has requested the footage, but the Sheriff's Office says it's part of their on-going investigation and can't release it yet.
