FORT MYERS, Fla. - Nearly 3,000 people showed up for free school supplies during the 11th annual Big Backpack Event.

The line at the Harborside Event Center in downtown Fort Myers was wrapped around the block.

Students were given a free backpack, folders, pencils, glue and other school supplies to help them prepare for the upcoming school year.

"I got here at 8:15 a.m. and the line was already down the right side of the building all the way to the rear of the building," said Thomas Hotchkiss, who was with his 3 kids.

Children were also treated to free back-to-school haircuts and face painting.

The event helped save parents hundreds of dollars that would have gone towards the event.

Organizers were prepared to provide 2,000 plus backpacks to students.

A back-to-school clothing drive also wrapped up at the event - with volunteers handing out clothes to kids in need.
