BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. - Former Bonita Springs Councilman Robert Wagner and his dog Baxter, an 11 lbs. Daschund, were attacked on their walk on Thursday.

After passing the Vacuum Depot store, Akita dogs pushed open the door and knocked Wagner down and attacked Baxter.

"You gotta have control of some of these dogs. They are running all over the place..." Wagner said.

Shoppers from a nearby store cae out and help corral the Akita dogs and free Baxter. His whole side was ripped open. Baxter was rushed to a veterinary emergency room where he was stitched up. Baxter's condition is still touch and go.

The Vacuum Depot store owner is devastated by what his dogs have done.

"Had I ever foreseen something like that ever happening, I would have never brought them here," he said. "...my dogs will never be coming back in the store because i never want to chance something like that again."

Wagner said the store owner has shown good faith in paying for Baxter's vet bills, totally over $1,150. Lee County Animal Patrol does not expect any charges to be filed against the store owner.
