CAPE CORAL, Fla.-Crime drops dramatically in some local cities, even amid budget cuts. We just got our hands on crime statistics for Fort Myers and Cape Coral. Both cities report less crime for the first six months of this year compared to the same time period of 2009.
Cape Coral had the biggest decline down 17.5%. Every major crime category declined except sexual battery which increased from 7 in 2009 to 13 this year. If you look at the numbers, you can see property crimes like burglary and car theft are all down.
There's good news in Fort Myers as well. The crime rate is down 10.6% even after the chief says they re-organized the departments after a retirement buyout and doing more with less. Murders are down dramatically and there was a drop in every crime category.
Both cities police department credit community involvement as the major reason for the drop in local crime.
Also this year, FMPD removed 164 illegal guns from city streets using information from the community.
Cape Coral police officials say working with citizens makes the cape one of Florida's safest cities.
