FORT MYERS, Fla. - A Fort Myers man has had enough with corporate world, so he joined the ranks of plenty of others and set out to start his own business.

According to Entrepreneur.com, one of the best times to start your own business is in a recession.

Doug Stewart has been working out of his home for almost a year now - hiring college hunks, and he said business is good.

College Hunks Hauling Junk. It's a catchy title that caught Doug Stewart's eye when he was looking for a change.

"I was caught up in what happened with the market conditions in terms of business here in SWFL and just felt it would be easiest for me to control my own destiny."

That's when Stewart decided this unique company was for him. He bought the Southwest Florida franchise.

"I wanted to account to myself and not the whims of what the market does or the whims of what somebody within the business might do."

So now, he has college hunks haul junk from people's homes. It's a year-round junk removal service.

Q: "All of your employees are college hunks?"

A: "We like to think so. I believe in the brand college hunks and it's a neat conversation piece to have with the customers out on the job."

He has little staff and easy scheduling - things that makes running a business easier.

"You really have to kind of feel it in your gut and say - this is something I think I can do, and you just have to jump and do it and hope with good luck and hard work it's going to pan out for you."

A lot of that junk that is hauled off gets recycled and some extra money even goes to college scholarships.

Some other businesses that started in recessions: Hewlett-Packard, the Walt Disney Corporation, and Microsoft.
