MATLACHA, Fla. - Arson and burglary - a small Southwest Florida community is still in shock after several businesses are destroyed.
Employee Rand Johnson says thieves broke through the shop's window and then stole 2 thousand dollars in fishing equipment from Live Bait Shrimp Shop in Matlacha.
He says, "All the rods, there used to be a bunch of hooks, weights, high dollar lures. "
Johnson is counting his blessings today, because for his neighbors across the street, the situation is much worse.
Deputies say, after burglarizing the bait shop, someone broke in through the back door of this post office early Saturday morning, and then started it on fire.
Johnson says, "I don't know if they did a grab and run and started burning things."
A realtor's office was also destroyed, but the beauty salon next to it- spared.
Resident Charles Krejci says, 'It looks like some of the mail got so badly smoke damaged, they left it there to sort it out."
Resident's were directed to go to another post office for their mail. Some were told it wasn't available. They aren't happy.
Krejci says, "I've got a few words that you can't print"
Equally upset, is a 15 year employee of Live Bait Shrimp Shop.
"I'm pretty beat up about it to be honest with you. It's not supposed to happen here, not in a small island community."
The owners of the building tell WINK that they hope to have the building repaired soon and open for business again.
