FORT MYERS, Fla--According to BP, the oil giant has paid $201 million in claims to thousands of people along the Gulf coast. The oil giant also says right now it's processing 17,000 additional claims.
BP also claims to have sent one or more payments to 32,000 people in the past ten weeks. They've processed 32 million dollars worth of claims for fishermen, 18 million dollars in claims for shrimpers, and an additional 77 million dollars worth of claims for people in other occupations who lost income due to the spill.
So far, people have submitted 114,000 claims, but BP claims more than half don't have enough information or the company can't reach the person who submitted the claim.
BP says it will send letters to 61,000 people letting them know what they can do to move forward with the claims process.
