CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla - Charlotte County Sheriff’s detectives arrested a Port Charlotte man this morning and say he stole a van and also burglarized a home Tuesday evening.
Michael Gene Dunbar is charged with Grand Theft Auto, Burglary, Possession of Burglary Tools and Grand Theft.
Detectives said Dunbar stole a 2000 Dodge van at 7 p.m. while it was parked at McDonalds, 4695 Tamiami Tr., Port Charlotte; the owner left the keys in the ignition. The van was located abandoned at 8:30 p.m. in Bayshore Park in Charlotte Harbor.
At 10:45 p.m. CCSO received a call of a burglary in progress to a home at 3525 Port Charlotte Blvd. in Port Charlotte. The owner said he found a man in his home after a rear bedroom window was smashed. The burglar stole a small black fire safe box and fled out the broken window. The safe contained vehicle titles, four $2 bills, cigarettes and Oxycodone pills.
A total of 15 deputies, K9, and detective units responded and set up a perimeter in the area. A neighbor told deputies he heard a loud bang and minutes later saw a man run past his home. The witness gave a full description of the man and a BOLO was issued. At 12:04 a.m. this morning, a CCSO deputy located a man matching the description and the witness gave a positive identification of the suspect found to be Dunbar.
Detectives searched Dunbar and found two of the missing $2 bills on his person. He was questioned, arrested, and transported to the Charlotte County Jail at 4:40 a.m. He is being held on no bond pending first appearance. This is Dunbar’s seventh booking into the County Jail.
