CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla - The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 1:31 p.m. Sunday to the Charlotte County Airport in Punta Gorda after a homemade fixed wing single-engine aircraft crash landed.
Deputies said the pilot Frank Schooley, 61, 2746 Geary St., Matlacha, was attempting to land his aircraft (N363SX) on the grassy area closest to runway 015 when the aircraft's landing gear hit the ground and ripped off, causing the aircraft to flip over and land on the cockpit roof. Schooley told deputies he was landing from a northerly direction into the soft field for a smoother landing and reported no mechanical or electrical malfunction prior to landing.
Schooley knocked out the cockpit glass window and exited unharmed. Charlotte County Airport EMS and Rescue arrived to treat the pilot who refused medical attention. Airport officials contacted FAA and NTSB about the crash.
