NORTON, Mass. (AP) - Troy Matteson is having his best opening round of the year at just the right time.
Matteson is facing elimination from the PGA Tour playoffs at the Deutsche Bank Championship. After starting with a bogey, he made seven birdies for a 6-under 65 that gave him a one-shot lead among the early starters at the TPC Boston.
Matteson is No. 97 in the FedEx Cup standings, and only the top 70 after this week advance to the third playoff event outside Chicago.
Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and Jerry Kelly each had a 66.
Among the late starters was four-time major champion Phil Mickelson, who used a belly putter for the first time in his career. Mickeslon made a pair of 8-foot birdie putts to start his round.
