LEE COUNTY, Fla.- In anticipation of a busy 'season,' Healthpark Medical Center will add a 9-bed observation unit for the first time. It's expected to open on Monday.

Vice President of Patient Services Cindy Brown says, "the real goal of this unit is to provide those patients waiting in the ER for their final room assignment, that they'll be brought to this unit and prepared for admission."

She says they transformed the office space into patient rooms after they discovered the need for more beds after last season. "We always have to be prepared in some way for those additional patients that present themselves either through ER, surgery or regular admissions. We're expecting a busy season and we always expect a busy season. We start planning for season last year. After season is over we reflect on what worked, what didn't and what we may be able to do to better serve the community," she says.

The hospitals also have a screen in the ER that shows them the bed capacity at each hospital, to better coordinate where to send patients. Brown says, "it's not uncommon for the other VPs and myself to get on the phone and talk about what's going on at each campus."

Cape Coral Hospital will also add additional beds throughout season.
