PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - A physicians group with offices across Southwest Florida has fired an employee for accessing personal patient files.

Florida Digestive Health Specialists, LLP has offices in Port Charlotte and Englewood and several in the Sarasota area. One of their employees allegedly improperly accessed and took photos of personal patient records.

Those records contain names, social security numbers, phone numbers, and dates of birth of their more than 4,400 patients.

The physicians group, specializing in gastroenterology disorders, has notified all of their patients about the privacy breach.

According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, the employee who's been fired, tried to print photos of patient records at a Walmart store. A manager intercepted them and turned the photos over to law enforcement.

So far, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office has not connected the case to any reports of identity theft. Representatives from Florida Digestive Health are working with law enforcement, including the IRS, to make sure they prosecute any one else who has access to the private records.
