Last week, Zachary and his friends were playing in a ditch near his home, that was filled with water. That's when friends say he was infected with a very rare, brain-eating amoeba. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there were only 28 cases reported in the United States from 2003 to 2012. The amoeba is found in warm, fresh bodies of water. The infection occurs when the contaiminated water enters the body through the nose.

His friends in LaBelle say they're not giving up hope. Some of Zachary's relatives are with him in Miami. Other friends and family members are home praying for his recovery.
