LEE COUNTY, Fla.- A group of parents who started a petition asking for mandatory recess, presented that petition to the Lee County School board Tuesday night.

The petition collected more than 1,000 signatures in less than a week, asking school board members to institute a required 20 minutes of unstructured recess everyday for students in grades K-8.

Tess Brennan, who started the petition, says, "some children are being more or less punished for low test grades so recess is being pulled so they can have 20 minutes of additional instruction, 20 minutes. Where if that 20 minutes they were allowed to be on the playground, they could be running free and that information could get into their brain."

Parents say they won't stop fighting for this issue.

The board said it would look into it, but no action is expected immediately. The district says students in elementary school are required to get 150 minutes of physical activity each week. The district is taking a closer look at the schools to see if anything needs to change.
