LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Lee County schools are reaping the benefits of your generosity today. Saturday, WINK News, 96.9 More FM and the Lee County School District teamed up to the "Stuff the Bus" with school supplies, and it was a success!
An "unstuff the bus" of sorts was held at the Alternative Learning Center this morning. School officials said donation drives like these are becoming crucial, with more than half of Lee County students eligible for free or reduced meals.
Many Lee County teachers were anticipating the bus' arrival. A big, yellow, school bus showed up, packed to the windows with precious cargo of a different kind. One by one, boxes of donations came out, while teachers and principals waited anxiously to dive in. The scene was compared to Black Friday.
To anyone else, the supplies are just notebooks and backpacks, but educators said the items are the tools for school success, and tools not every family can afford.
The bus driver who transported the supplies estimated he was carrying about 3,500 pounds.
