LEE COUNTY, Fla.- School district leaders say it will cost $1.8 million dollars to put a school resource officer at every Lee County elementary school permanently.
Last week, the district announced it now has 10 Lee County Deputies working as school resource officers to rotate among the district's elementary schools.
But that's just a temporary fix for the rest of the school year.
Today during a budget meeting, Superintendent Dr. Joseph Burke said it will cost $1.8 million for about 40 school resource officers so they can have one at every school.
He says the item is in the budget for consideration, but now they have to find the money for it. "It's something we would like to do but obviously the board has to figure out, okay can we afford to do it and the county commission will have to have a similar decision they'll have to make," he says.
The budget process is still in the early stages and the board won't start making decisions until about June or July.
